Handmade Pony Dolls! #PoniesforMexico

Posted by Lindsay Douglass on

Personalized pony merch just got 10x better, because Ponyapp just officially launched our new series “PonyApp Product of the Month”. We planned to keep our lips sealed until October, but tragic circumstances meant a change of plans. With the recent devastating earthquake in Mexico, we couldn’t help but announce our first product early. The product to kick off this series is from a company called Tejidos Nena, and they’re adorable pony dolls that were handmade in Guadalajara, Mexico. We’re eager to sell out fast, because we’re going to donate 50% of the profits to the disaster relief in Mexico.

Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Nena Rodriquez has been riding horses her whole life. She first fell in love with the sport when her family introduced her to “Charrería”, a long cherished family  tradition similar to rodeo that started on the haciendas of old Mexico.

Nena started knitting dolls (and more specifically ponies) with acrylic yarn 5 years ago and has been perfecting her technique ever since. She is meticulous and it takes her over a day and a half to knit a single pony, ensuring that she gives each and every one a special artistic touch. In the past 3 years, Nena has made over 400 knitted ponies and recently hired two friends to help her keep up with the increased demand from PonyApp!

Thanks to one of our loyal PonyApp users, we discovered Nena’s Instagram (@Tejidosnena because her nickname is “nena” and “Tejidos” is the Spanish word for “knits”). She posts incredible photos of her handmade yarn ponies which come in all different shapes, sizes and shades. Anyone who follows The PonyApp knows how much we love customized horse avatars so it is no wonder why we were so excited to discover her account and make her knitted ponies our first PonyApp product of the month.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of this series and support Nena’s small-business, but most importantly we are grateful that we have the opportunity to raise money for the disaster relief for the earthquake in Mexico. These are the perfect gifts for baby showers, birthdays, Christmas, so if you can come up with an excuse to support this cause, then buy a Tejidos Nena pony and help us help Mexico!
